PEAK TV: THE ORIGINAL SERIES REACH ANOTHER RECORD IN 2017
Mindhunter, from Netflix, is one of 487 original scripted series released in 2017, a figure that represents a 7% increase from the original 455 shows produced in 2016.
What was once known as the “golden age” of television has evolved into the something called “Peak TV”, a term that refers to the explosion of shows on the small screen, either through open signals, cable or streaming . There is so much to see that many experts already believe that the industry has reached the maximum number of possible original programs.
The term “Peak TV” was coined in 2015 by the president of the FX network, John Landgraf, who stated: “There is simply too much television… The audience is overwhelmed by the sheer volume of TV shows. It’s impossible to get you to take another look ta something you’ve already rejected.”
It has been two years since that statement, and now, the reality is that the number of original scripted series continues to increase.
According to a study carried out by FX, in 2017 a new record of 487 original shows was reached in the the United States, which represents 7% more than the 455 in 2016.
Now, with the announced $7,000 million investment in Netflix production, $4,500 million in Amazon, and $1,000 million in Hulu for 2018, the Peak TV era is expected to continue its rise, creating an important opportunity for television creatives and producers.
